History

Akema Fine Chemicals was founded in 1973 by the brothers Attilio and Mario Grossi for the production of Allantoin, a skin active ingredient largely used in cosmetic and pharmaceutical products.

This first product line was followed by the manufacture of the Allantoin derivatives, obtained by the reaction of Allantoin with other skin actives, like aluminum salts, panthenol, ascorbic acid, acetylmethionine and glycyrrhetinic acid.

Over the years, an increasing demand from the market has encouraged the company to fortify its productive capacity and, thanks to the high quality of its products, world-wide success has ensued in a growing though difficult market sector.

In 1979 the company was taking its first steps in the production of preserving agents for cosmetics, first Imidazolidinyl Urea then Diazolidinyl urea, followed by some liquid blends with parabens.

From these small beginnings, a process of continual expansion began, which led the company to consolidate its position on world markets in the 80’s.
These years have been characterized by large-scale investments, principally aimed at boosting production and reaching ever-higher standards of industrial quality.

In 1994 a Quality System has been established for the control of the company activities, processes and products, a modern laboratory was equipped for Quality Control and R&D activities.

During last years, following the extremely rapid changes of cosmetic market, Akema has notably broadened its products portfolio, particularly adapting the preservative range to the extremely rapid changing demands of the modern formulations.

In 2005 a joint venture was established in China (Hebei province) to found Huanghua Suntime Chemical Industry Co. Ltd.
Through this new company Akema gains access to strategic raw materials for its manufacturing processes and business. This acquisition will enhance the production capabilities, the price competitivity and will strengthen the position of Akema in the Asian market. This cooperation is limited to the manufacture of chemical intermediates, while the whole production of cosmetic preservatives and allantoins are kept in the Italian factory.

Today Akema is recognised as a qualified manufacturer of cosmetic ingredients, focused on Allantoin chemistry and cosmetic preservatives, with a firm position in the marketplace, and a distribution network extended to more than 40 strategic countries in every continent.
